Overweight and Obesity Add Risk of Breast Cancer Recurrence and Death
August 28, 2012 — Women who have overweight or obesity at the time they are diagnosed with the most common type of breast cancer are more 30% more likely to experience a recurrence later and 50% more likely to die, according to a study published online by Cancer, the journal of the American Cancer Society.Researchers at Albert Einstein’s College of Medicine, the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and the UPMC Cancer Center re-examined data from several large previous National Cancer Institute studies conducted among women with breast cancer. The relationship between a woman’s weight and cancer recurrence and/or death held true for women diagnosed with hormone-sensitive tumors in their breasts, but not for women with two other types of cancer–HER2 and Triple Negative.
