Not a Latte

Who Ordered the Broccoli Latte?

Broccoli LatteRarely does one innovation cover so many angles. But Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, is pushing every button with this one – a broccoli latte. Even though they might not fix our unhealthy food supply all by themselves, the folks at CSIRO are sure giving it a try.

Drink Your Veggies

Who needs a Vitamix if your favorite barista can serve you a broccoli latte? CSIRO has found a way to take broccoli that might otherwise become food waste and turn it into a functional food powder. According to CSIRO, it packs a healthy punch – one serving of broccoli in just two tablespoons of powder.

Wait, There’s More!

Hort Innovation worked with CSIRO to come up with this innovation. CEO John Lloyd says that even if a broccoli latte isn’t your cup of tea (so to speak), you have many other options. Like smoothies, soups, baking, and hidden broccoli in meals for your fussy kids. He says:

With a rising trend in healthy eating across the board, Australian growers are always looking at ways to diversify their products and cut waste while meeting consumer demand. Research shows the average Australian is still not eating the recommended daily intake of vegetables a day, and options such as broccoli powder will help address this.

These clever folks are even working on “extruded snacks with 20-100 percent vegetable content.” We’re calling this a home run with the bases loaded.

And you guys in the back, snickering about bizarre processed foods, pipe down!
