Python Meat: It Tastes Like Chicken, but It’s Sustainable
The ideas that float freely into discourse about food policy can be fascinating. The latest in this line of intoxicating concepts is python meat. A new analysis in Scientific Reports tells us it tastes like chicken, but it’s sustainable.
“Reptile meat is not unlike chicken: high in protein, low in saturated fats, and with widespread aesthetic and culinary appeal.
“Python farming may offer a flexible and efficient response to global food insecurity.”
As an added bonus, the researchers tell us that python ranchers can help with animal rights issues:
“They display few of the complex animal welfare issues commonly seen in caged birds and mammals.”
The Image Problem
Of course, there is the image problem. Lead author Dan Natusch concedes that many people fear and hate snakes. “I think it will be a long time before you see python burgers served up at your favourite local restaurant here,” he says.
Can fearless food policy advocates clear such a hurdle? Maybe they can tap into some of the PR brilliance behind Impossible Foods.
Can We Tie It Into Obesity Prevention?
It’s a tall order, but perhaps a tie-in with obesity prevention is possible. After all, a new paper in Obesity Reviews tells us:
“Sustainable diets may decrease the risk of overweight/obesity and therefore could serve as enablers for improving both public and planetary health.”
From there, it’s just a short leap to a narrative telling us pythons can fight obesity, save the planet, and provide an abundant supply of protein that tastes just like chicken.

This is quite a TIL and it seems like a good idea.
And a potentially better idea than ranching would be trying to eradicate them from Florida!!

Ask anyone in South Florida (especially writers Carl Hiaasen and Dave Barry) how good an idea it would be to introduce pythons into an area anywhere!
