We Commit to Care for Obesity Care Week and Beyond
Today marks the first day of Obesity Care Week. This is a time to recognize the importance of high-quality, science-based, and compassionate care for people living with obesity. True commitment to care means embracing advocacy, evidence-based treatment, and respect for individuals affected by this chronic disease. Organizations like the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) and The Obesity Society (TOS) play critical roles in ensuring that care is driven by both patient needs and sound science.
As a champion for Obesity Care Week, we indeed commit to care. We ask that you join us and share that commitment. Take the pledge now.
Support, Not Stigma
For too long, people with obesity have faced stigma instead of support. The OAC works tirelessly to change this by advocating for access to effective treatments, insurance coverage, and policies that prioritize patient well-being. Stigma creates real barriers to care. This might take the form of a doctor dismissing a patient’s health concerns due to their weight. Or it might be an insurer denying coverage for treatments vital for health and wellbeing. The OAC’s mission is to ensure that those with obesity receive the dignity, respect, and medical care they deserve.
Scientific Integrity
At the same time, The Obesity Society champions scientific integrity in obesity research and treatment. In an era where misinformation is rampant, TOS plays a crucial role in ensuring that public health policies and clinical guidelines are based on solid evidence. Obesity is not a simple matter of willpower; it is a complex disease influenced by genetics, biology, environment, and behavior. Effective care requires more than just diet and exercise advice. It demands personalized, science-driven interventions, including medications, surgery, and behavioral therapy when appropriate.
Committing to Equitable Care
Committing to care means advocating for both patients and science. It means pushing back against outdated narratives that blame individuals rather than addressing systemic barriers to effective treatment. It means fighting for policies that expand access to care and supporting research that advances our understanding of obesity.
At its core, commitment to care is about ensuring that every person with obesity receives the same level of compassion, respect, and scientific rigor as any other patient with a chronic disease. Through the combined efforts of the OAC, TOS, and dedicated advocates, we can build a future where obesity care is not just available but truly effective and equitable.
