Numbskulls in Congress Creating an American Hunger Crisis

Hunger, illustration by Thomas Theodor HeineIn 2016, the use of the word “numbskull” in English literature soared to a new high. It has remained high ever since. Though we cannot be sure why, we are confident that members of Congress are earning that label as they crash toward creating an utterly unnecessary American hunger crisis by cutting off SNAP food assistance benefits for more than 40 million children, seniors, and low-income families.

If they continue on this course, CEO Joel Berg, of Hunger Free America, says:

“We will have the greatest hunger catastrophe in America since the Great Depression, and I don’t say that as hyperbole.”

Do Your Job!

Everyone in this unnecessary mess is a acting like skunk. (Sorry, skunks.)

The administration says they will not tap into billions of dollars set aside in an emergency fund to avert this crisis. It would be illegal, they say. No such worries arise when it comes to mass firings, military deployments in American cities that don’t want them, or blowing up boats in the Caribbean. But perhaps an American hunger crisis is not such an urgent matter for this administration.

Likewise Democrats and Republicans are more interested in trading insults than problem-solving. Republicans call their Democratic Party colleagues “radical left socialists” while Democrats call Republicans “far-right extremists.” It’s great stuff for political ads. For solving problems, not really.

So the stalemate continues.

Hurting Real People

Meanwhile, serious panic is taking hold in people who are already hurting. In New Jersey, Hannah Mann relies on food subsidies to feed her family, including her prematurely-born child who requires special formula milk. She explains the human crisis this creates for her:

“These are expenses that we cannot cover. The preemie formula alone is $50 a can. It’s like a domino effect. Those guys are not working while we’re literally down here fighting over scraps.”

Maybe this explains why both Republicans and Democrats are so widely despised. They are screwing up the lives of millions of people. To say they are numbskulls might be too generous.
