We are in the midst of what used to be known as diet and weight loss season. And now the Super Bowl is coming up. Instead of diet ads this year, our video feeds are full of ads for telehealth and GLP-1s. Some of them are annoying. But when Serena Williams comes on screen to talk about weight management in terms of health, she has our attention. No doubt when her ad runs during the Super Bowl, it will get even more attention.
Could this be a spark that signals a shift in the perception of what it means to seek medical weight management or obesity care?

Clearly, with a paid celebrity spokesperson and a Super Bowl ad, the aim is to make an impact in popular culture. The message is bold and clear. Williams is talking it up and telling anyone who will listen that taking a GLP-1 has helped her reach health goals she could not reach without it. Her cholesterol numbers are down, her blood sugar is steady, and her joint stress is less. She says she’s feeling healthier than ever, telling Bloomberg:
“The Super Bowl commercial is so personal to me. It’s about my real life, it’s about my health, and it’s the biggest stage to tell a story like this, particularly as an athlete.”
Health First
